Analysis of a new regional market for Willmott Dixon

Willmott Dixon is one of the UK’s largest privately owned construction, housing, repair, maintenance and investment companies. As part of the strategic review up to 2012 the company needed to establish whether a regional market would support a new office. In particular the senior management team wanted to understand who the key competitors, clients and architects were in the region. They asked Leading Edge to use their data analysis and construction industry expertise to provide this information.

We started by analysing government construction output data by sector for the company’s core sectors to review current performance and past trends. We also produced a bespoke regional construction forecast for the market, split by sector, up to 2012.

We then analysed the latest set of project planning data to establish which sectors were currently in growth or decline and to identify the main players operating in each market. By using the company’s current turnover figures we were then able to estimate their current market share by sector and provide outline turnover figures up to 2012.

We also identified the ‘hot spots’ of current and future construction activity in the region, which provided an insight into the best possible location for an office. The headline recommendations were supported by over 100 slides of detailed data analysis.

The company has since opened a new office in the region and is starting to build up its presence in the local market.
